SEVENTY YEARS

This entire land will be a place of ruins and an object of horror, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon for seventy years. “Then it will be when seventy years are completed I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation,” declares the Lord, “for their wrongdoing, and the land of the Chaldeans; and I will make it an everlasting desolation.” … For this is what the Lord says: “When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place.” [Jeremiah 25:11-12, 29:10 (NASB)]

leopard lacewing butterflyThe timelines in most Bibles indicate that the first captives were taken to Babylon in 605 BC and the first exiles returned to Judah in 538 BC. No matter how you figure it, the years don’t quite match Jeremiah’s prophecy of seventy years. Is “close” good enough for God or does He round up? If we are to trust Biblical prophecy, it should be accurate, and this apparent discrepancy is troubling.

First, we must determine exactly what Jeremiah prophesied would last seventy years. Thanks to a variety of theologians far wiser than I, my research led me to see three different overlapping seventy-year prophecies in Jeremiah’s words!

The first prophecy was that Judah and the surrounding nations would serve Babylon for seventy years. The original Hebrew was abad, meaning to work, serve, or labor for. Jeremiah 25:12 refers to seventy years being completed for Babylon rather than in Babylon. The Babylonian (Chaldean) Empire became the most powerful state in the ancient world in 609 BC when they defeated the Assyrian king Ashur-uballit II. For the next seventy years, all of the nations served them until Babylon was conquered by Persia in in 539 BC. The Babylonian kingdom could not withstand God’s promised judgment and, as prophesied by Jeremiah, it fell seventy years after it ascended.

The second of Jeremiah’s prophecies may have been about the Temple. In 25:11, he prophesied that the land would become a chorbah (meaning a ruin or desolation) and a shammah (meaning waste or horror). While I’d interpreted this to mean untended fields, the Babylonians left the poor and uneducated Jews behind to tend to the land. Rather than the fields, the prophet may have been referring to the ruins of Jerusalem and its demolished Temple. Indeed, the city of Jerusalem was desolate and “an object of horror” after the Temple’s destruction in 586 BC. In 516, exactly seventy years after its destruction, the second Temple was restored and there was feasting and celebration at its dedication. The city had returned to life and the second of Jeremiah’s prophecies was fulfilled.

Nevertheless, Jeremiah’s mention of bringing the people back in 29:10 certainly implies deportation. If the third overlapping prophecy is about the exile, how do we reconcile the dates? Let’s start with what we know for sure! The exile began in 605 BC when Nebuchadnezzar ascended the throne. The Babylonian army besieged Jerusalem for the first time and returned to Babylon with Temple gold and the first of the exiles. We also know that Persia’s Cyrus issued a decree allowing the Jews to return to Judah in 538 BC.

What we don’t know is what part of the year Cyrus’ proclamation was made, how long preparations took, the date the Jews departed, or when they arrived in Jerusalem. We can, however, make an educated guess! If the proclamation was made toward the end of 538, preparations for departure may not have started until sometime the following year. The Jews weren’t slaves in Babylon—they’d integrated into the economy and many had prospered. Except for the oldest exiles, Babylon was the only home they knew and a decision to resettle in Judah would not have been made quickly or easily. Those who decided to return had homes to sell, businesses to liquidate, possessions to pack, and livestock and provisions to gather. Along with everything else they packed, the exiles brought at least 61,000 gold coins, 6,250 pounds of silver, and 100 robes for the priests. Ezra tells us that Cyrus returned 5,400 articles of gold and silver taken from the Temple; cataloguing and carefully packing those items certainly took time. The exiles’ caravan consisted of 42,360 Judeans, 7,337 servants, and 200 singers (for a grand total of 49,897 people). There were 736 horses, 245 mules, 435 camels, and 6,720 donkeys. Regardless of when the proclamation was made, it’s not unreasonable to think that organizing and preparing for their departure may have lasted the better part of a year or more, bringing the departure date well into late 537 or early to mid 536.

The distance from Babylon to Jerusalem is over 500 miles as the crow flies; the exiles, however, weren’t crows and their route was about 900 miles. 80 years later, it took Ezra four months to make that journey (with fewer people, livestock, and supplies) so it probably took this first group at least that long (and probably longer) which easily pushes the timeline for their arrival well into 536! Even though Cyrus’ proclamation was made in 538, the Jewish exile didn’t end until that first group set foot back in Jerusalem which probably was in 536. In ancient times, any part of a year counted as a year and, counting inclusively from 605 to 536, that’s seventy years!

It seems that Jeremiah made three overlapping but equally accurate seventy-year prophecies. The first dealt with Babylon’s seventy years of power, the second was about the Temple’s seventy years of desolation and ruin, and the third concerned the Judean exiles’ years away from Jerusalem. As it turns out, “close” isn’t good enough for God and He doesn’t round His numbers! Jeremiah’s prophecy was right on the money!

He took into exile those who had escaped from the sword to Babylon; and they were servants to him and to his sons until the rule of the kingdom of Persia, to fulfill the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days of its desolation it kept the Sabbath until seventy years were complete. [2 Chronicles 36:20-21 (NASB)]

THE ONLY CONSTANT

rainbowOur fast-paced world is ever-changing and once ordinary items like slide rules, cassette tapes, boom boxes, floppy discs, dial phones, film, and VCRs are relics. My kids don’t use maps, write checks, or have a land line and my grands have never used a library card catalogue, set of encyclopedias, dictionary, carbon paper, or typewriter. We no longer need to get up to change channels, turn the lights on or off, or see who’s at the door. Our camera, maps, calculator, credit cards, compass, note pad, address book, plane tickets, and Bible all fit into our cell phones and everything on our phones (along with a fitness tracker and heart monitor) fits into a watch!

The world is in a constant state of flux! 38 different models of the iPhone have been released since its introduction in 2007 (with a new generation expected in the fall)! Since its introduction in 1985, there have been 49 versions of the Windows operating system. What with chatbots, artificial intelligence, the metaverse and internet of things, chatbots, NFTs, cryptocurrency, 3-D printers, and reality that can be extended, augmented, or virtual, by the time I’ve caught up to the latest technology, I’m already behind the times!

In theory, all those changes are supposed to be for the better but new doesn’t necessarily mean better (as the Coca-Cola company learned when they tried to change their drink formula in 1985). Unfortunately, the updated and improved version can be worse than its predecessor (which is what most tech people would say about Windows ME, Vista, and Windows 8)!

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus said, “The only thing constant is change,” and, despite my previous rant, I disagree. The one unchanging constant in our lives is God and His unchangeability is called immutability. Unlike things that can be modified like iPhones, Windows, and Coke, something immutable cannot change. Regardless of technology, innovative trends, style, or the passage of time, God’s truth, purpose, promises, and character remain the same. God needs no updates because He is the very essence of perfection—He can’t become more or less, greater or smaller, or any better than He already is!

God’s immutability doesn’t mean that He is a static, impersonal, remote, disinterested being. Although He is unchanging, we are not deists who think of God as an indifferent uninvolved clockmaker who made a clock, wound it up, and then ignored it. He is actively involved in all of His creation and regularly interacts with everything and everyone in it.

Rather than impassive and distant, God is enmeshed in our lives. He walked and talked with Adam and cared enough to give him a companion in Eve! He made covenants with Noah and Abraham and revealed Himself to people like Moses, David, Elijah, Paul, Peter, and John. The God who walked in Eden with Adam, hung a rainbow in the sky for Noah, wrestled with Jacob, etched His law onto stone tablets for Moses, sent manna from heaven, and blinded Paul on the road to Damascus is the very same God who walks with us today!

Although God’s interaction with us may change (as it did when He evicted Adam and Eve from Eden, permitted Satan to plague Job, or allowed Judah to be taken into captivity), God’s nature never changes! Timeless and eternal, God was and always will be holy, unlimited, all-powerful, ever-present, all-knowing, all-loving, and divine. Fortunately, the original 1.01 version of God (introduced at the beginning of time) is all we need or want! Thank you, O Lord, for being the one constant in our lives.

MUSTARD

The Kingdom of Heaven is like a mustard seed planted in a field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but it becomes the largest of garden plants; it grows into a tree, and birds come and make nests in its branches. [Matthew 13:31-32 (NLT)]

Following the Parable of the Four Soils and the Parable of the Weeds, Jesus told a third parable of growth by comparing the Kingdom of Heaven to a mustard seed. I know little about farming and soil but I’m familiar with black mustard, (Brassica nigra), the kind of mustard grown in Palestine in Jesus’ day. Its clusters of bright yellow flowers are a common sight in the meadows, thickets, vacant lots, and fallow fields in my home state of Illinois.

Both times Jesus mentioned the mustard seed, He referred to its small size. When comparing the size of our faith to that of a mustard seed, He told us even if our faith were as small as a mustard seed that, “Nothing would be impossible.” When comparing the Kingdom of Heaven to a mustard seed, He called it the “smallest of all seeds.” Having admired the mustard seed charm my sister had on her bracelet, I questioned His statement. While it was small, I knew other seeds are even smaller. Surely the One who was there at creation’s beginning knew that the almost dust-like seeds of orchids and begonias are smaller. Additionally, while the mustard plant can grow as tall as 10 to 12 feet, it’s not a tree!

Jesus, however, wasn’t teaching botany, He was telling a parable and hyperbole (an exaggerated statement not taken literally that’s used to emphasize a point) was a common technique in rabbinic teaching. Jesus used it when speaking of recognizing a speck in our neighbor’s eye but not seeing the log in ours, Pharisees straining the gnats out of their water while drinking a camel, and trying to put a camel through a needle. When we look at the original Greek, however, we find less exaggeration. Jesus refers to the mustard seed as the smallest seed which a man sows in his field. While not the smallest seed in existence, mustard was the smallest seed that would have been sown in a Palestinian field. Jesus says it grows larger than a lachanōn (a garden herb or vegetable) and, indeed, black mustard does seem like a tree when compared to most herbs! That a seed measuring less than a tenth of an inch can grow 1,440 times its original size into a 12-foot plant in just one season is impressive and that was His point!

While most of America’s farmers consider this pervasive plant a noxious weed, it’s been cultivated as a crop for thousands of years in the Holy Land. Its seeds were powdered or made into a paste for medicinal and culinary purposes. Unlike most of us, Jesus’ listeners were familiar with mustard’s characteristics. As I describe those qualities, consider how they might apply to God’s Kingdom here on earth.

With its narrow clusters of small yellow flowers, mustard isn’t a showy flower—one might even call it a humble little thing. Nevertheless, a golden field of mustard is a thing of beauty. For a variety of scientific reasons, black mustard has a competitive advantage over most other plants. It’s one of the first plants to spring up after a fire and can out-compete anything else growing in the same field. It produces thousands of seeds every season and mustard’s long-lasting seeds can survive underground for as long as 50 years. An annual, while it dies at the end of a season, it regenerates at the next rainy season.

Although mustard was welcome as a cash crop in Palestine, because of its characteristics, black mustard is considered invasive in 44 of the 48 contiguous states. Nevertheless, in spite of the Midwest’s farmers’ persistent efforts to eradicate it, black mustard returns every year. Nature Collective describes it as “an ornery guest that refuses to take the hint.” In spite of persecution from Jewish leaders and Rome, the early church was just as defiant, determined, and persistent as black mustard!

Jesus’ listeners would have been familiar with the plant’s beauty and ability to self-seed, lay down a deep root system, and grow almost anywhere, along with mustard’s knack of surviving and thriving in less-than-ideal conditions. Jesus’ point was that from small and humble beginnings, the Kingdom of Heaven—Jesus’ domain as Messiah—would gradually grow into a large and beautiful entity. Once seeded, nothing seems to stop mustard and the same goes for the Kingdom!

May our faith be as persistent, hardy, determined, steadfast, and as difficult to destroy as the mustard seed!

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.” [Matthew 17:20 (NLT)]

THE WEEDS

Just as the weeds are sorted out and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the world. The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Then the righteous will shine like the sun in their Father’s Kingdom. Anyone with ears to hear should listen and understand! [Matthew 13:40-43 (NLT)]

thistleFollowing the Parable of the Sower and the Soils, Jesus told another parable about the coming of the Kingdom. In the Parable of the Weeds, after the farmer plants wheat, his enemy sows weeds in the same field. Jesus’ hearers would have known the weed likely was darnel. Called wheat’s “evil twin,” it looks and behaves much like wheat. When wheat is consumed it gives life but, when darnel is consumed, this inedible look-alike causes nausea and even death. Sowing weeds in a field was an act of sabotage and Roman law specifically prohibited doing so with darnel. When nations went to war, agricultural vandalism was a common practice. Olive trees were cut down, grape vines destroyed, and fields were salted so nothing would grow.

When the farmer’s workers ask to pull out the weeds, they are told to wait. Because both the weeds and wheat are deeply rooted, pulling up the weeds would uproot the wheat, as well. Not wanting to destroy the good by removing the bad, the farmer decides to wait until harvest time when the weeds can be better identified and separated without damaging the wheat. At that time, the wheat will be put in the barn but the weeds will be burned.

While the farmer in the Parable of the Soils represents those who share the gospel, the farmer in this parable is Jesus. The field is the world and the enemy is Satan, whose strategy is to invade, infiltrate, penetrate, and take control of the field. Even though he knows he’s lost the war, Satan wants to inflict as much damage as possible until his final defeat. Christ’s followers are the wheat and, even though they look much like wheat, the weeds are unbelievers. The harvest comes near the end of the age when the angels will come with their sickles and winnowing forks to bring in the harvest. While the righteous will come into the Kingdom, the sons of the evil one will be punished and thrown into the fires of hell.

Focusing on the final judgment, the parable tells us that what seems uncertain now will be unmistakable at the end of the age and God’s enemies will be removed! This parable repeats the good news of the Parable of the Soils: in spite of opposition and interference from its enemy, God’s Kingdom will prevail! If there is any doubt in your mind, just read the book of Revelation. Sickness, famine, war, hatred, pestilence, hypocrisy, natural disaster, genocide, abuse, violence, idolatry, deception, calamity, and even noxious weeds do not have the last word—Jesus Christ does!

DAILY BREAD (BEGGARS CAN’T BE CHOOSERS)

Give us this day our daily bread… Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? [Matthew 6:11,26 (RSV)]

A pastor friend told me about returning from a service project with some of his SK8 church youth including Brian, a young man new to the faith. When they stopped for lunch at a taco stand, a street person asked Brian for money. Trying to do what Jesus would want done, the new Christian offered to buy the hard-up man a burrito. It was when Brian ordered two bean burritos that his dining guest loudly complained, “I ain’t eatin’ no $%2#!* bean burrito—I want a steak one!” Brian had little money to spare but, since the man was getting vociferous, he ordered the steak burrito for his guest and a bean one for himself. Apparently, the vagrant wasn’t familiar with the proverbs about beggars not being choosers, half a loaf being better than none, and not looking a gift horse in the mouth!

When I came across a cartoon done by Mark Lynch about Jesus feeding the multitude, I remembered my pastor friend’s story. In Lynch’s cartoon, Jesus is standing in front of a large group. Behind Him are piles of loaves and fish. With the caption “IF IT HAD BEEN TODAY,” the various speech balloons show members of the crowd asking if the fish contains mercury and if there’s a vegan option. Others want to know if the bread is gluten-free, baked locally, or has nuts. Another one complains, “I’m lactose intolerant.” While it is just a comic, I think Lynch isn’t far off. Human nature being what it is, the day Jesus fed a multitude of hungry people, I suspect there were some who grumbled about the lack of things like honey, olives, grapes or figs. Perhaps others asked, “Is this the best He can do?”

Shortly after teaching us to pray, “Give us this day our daily bread,” Jesus reassured us that, since God cares for the birds, He surely will care for us. His miracle of feeding the multitude shows us that God cares for His people. God, however, isn’t like Burger King and never promised us, “Have it your way!” He certainly never told us (as the hamburger chain now does), “You Rule.”

God is concerned about meeting our necessities but, like the homeless man and the comic’s multitude, our vision of a necessity often differs from His. Our daily bread probably isn’t brioche, a gluten-free all-natural blueberry muffin, a $10 loaf of artisanal sourdough from the farmer’s market, or even that $3.79 orange scone from Panera. It definitely isn’t the Gold Leaf Bread from Algatocin, Spain, that’s made with 250 mg of gold dust! It may not even be a whole loaf and it probably won’t include extras like Nutella, honey, fruit preserves, pate or avocado spread. Daily bread is what’s necessary and nothing more—anything else is like frosting on a cake or peanut butter on toast!

“We are beggars; this is true,” was written on a scrap of paper found in Martin Luther’s pocket when he died. How easily we forget that. In truth, we are not that different from the panhandler at the taco stand or Lynch’s multitude gathered on a hillside—more often than not we are unappreciative of the gifts we’re given. Perhaps, after asking God for our daily bread, we might want to add another prayer: “Help me recognize my needs and appreciate your provision.” With thanksgiving, let us reach out and gladly accept God’s love, forgiveness, mercy, Holy Spirit, and daily provision on His terms, not ours. Let us remember that beggars can’t be choosers.

And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 4:19 (RSV)]

FROM DEATH TO LIFE

“I am the resurrection and the life,” replied Jesus. “Anyone who believes in me will live, even if they die. And anyone who lives and believes in me will never, ever die.” [John 11: 25-26 (NTE)]

Courtesy of technology, we recently attended an Illinois church service while sitting at our computers in Florida. The choir, accompanied by pipe organ and trumpet, began with Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring and ended with Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. The trumpet’s bright piercing sound and the organ’s lilting accompaniment in the first song and the uplifting words in the final one makes them popular choices for joyful occasions like weddings, Christmas, and Easter. Although we were rejoicing, we weren’t celebrating nuptials, Christ’s birth, or His resurrection. Instead, we were rejoicing in a life well lived and celebrating the life of a friend who recently went home to God.

During the service, several people spoke of this Christian man’s faith, character, modesty, generosity, humility, compassion, honesty, reliability, thoughtfulness, wisdom, and curiosity. A leader both in his community and church, he built consensus rather than caused discord, bore the fruit of the Spirit, and truly lived his life as a follower of Christ. Although he played the trumpet in college, he never blew his own horn or called attention to himself. Nevertheless, he was a shining light in a world filled with darkness. Our lives were blessed by his presence and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

As much as his family and friends mourn his absence, the service was one of unparalleled joy because, while here on earth, he followed Jesus with his heart, soul, body, and mind. We could be joyful because we know death is not the end of our lives—just of our lives in these perishable bodies. As Christians, we have hope of something greater that goes far beyond life and death.

In contrast, I can’t feel joy at any funeral or memorial service for a non-believer. While songs may be sung, they’re more likely to be My Way or Over the Rainbow than Abide with Me or It is Well with My Soul. After sharing memories and listing accomplishments, the person giving the eulogy will say reassuring things about the deceased being in a better place, with the angels, or watching over us—none of which are based in reality. Unbelievers are not going home or into the arms of God, they won’t be “looking down” at their loved ones, and there won’t be a happy reunion in heaven with friends and family. The only way an unbeliever lives on is in photographs and people’s memories; sadly, even those will fade and be lost over time. There is little comfort in the passing of a non-believer.

While there are different opinions in Christ’s church about what happens immediately after death, there is unanimity in His church about what eventually happens—we will come face to face with God and our entire lives will be examined. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection mean that His followers aren’t afraid of God’s judgment on the day. Regardless of our failures and sins, we are recipients of God’s grace and forgiven for our wrongs. Because of God’s mercy and grace, all of His adopted children have a confirmed reservation waiting for them in heaven.

Because the only way to heaven is faith in Jesus and there is no return from the depths of hell, there is no comfort or joy in the passing of a non-believer. On the other hand, in spite of our sorrow, we can rejoice when Christ’s followers depart this world because we know their destination, that our separation is only temporary, and that we will meet again in God’s good time. That’s why, at their passing, we can raise our voices and joyfully sing, “Joyful, joyful, we adore You, God of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before You, Opening to the sun above.”
