A severely ill 12-year old girl’s wish was to be a singing star and, thanks to the Make-a-Wish Foundation, last Sunday her dream came true. Over a year’s worth of planning went into creating a full concert experience for her. The flashing lights of a police car announced her arrival and, when the professionally made-up, coifed, and gowned star exited her limo, we joined hundreds of others and screamed like adoring fans. While her security team (complete with dark glasses and earpieces) cleared the way, she and her entourage walked down the red carpet to the theater. The crowd cheered, took photos, waved banners and begged for autographs. Once in the theater, backed up by the choir from her school, she sang to an auditorium filled with 300 admiring fans.
While being a pop star is not an unusual wish for a tween, if someone offered to fulfill one wish for you, what would it be? Some of us may have exotic trips on our bucket list. At $76,950, however, that 24-day “Around the World by Private Jet” tour sponsored by National Geographic will probably remain just a fantasy. Others of us might wish to complete a major feat—hike the Appalachian Trail, bike across America, get a book published or have 600 species of birds on our Life List. It certainly isn’t wrong to wish big dreams; after all, wishes often become goals and goals can become reality. Good wishes are ones that center on God and His desires for us: wisdom, peace, spiritual gifts, the coming of God’s kingdom, or the salvation of others. On the other hand, our wishes should never lead us to sin, be for more material goods than needed, harm others, erase what God has already given us or try to circumvent His plan for our lives.
The behavior of the Israelites on their trek to the Promised Land is a perfect example of wrongful wishing. Tired of God’s generous provision of manna and desiring more than necessary, they cried “We want meat!” That wish certainly didn’t turn out well for them. Although they got what they wanted—60 bushels of quail apiece—they also got something extra. Before the quail had been eaten, God sent a plague and thousands died. Unfortunately, the Israelites were slow learners. Ready to enter the Promised Land but afraid of the Canaanites, they expressed their dissatisfaction with God’s plan. “If only we had died in the land of Egypt! Or if only we had died in this desert!” Again, God accommodated them. Over the next forty years, all of those faithless people got exactly what they wanted and died in the desert. Although Moses lived long enough to see Canaan again, only Caleb and Joshua and the Israelites who’d been under twenty at the time of the rebellion entered the Promised Land.
Their experience should teach us to be careful what we wish for—we just might get it!

“We covet your prayers,” said the new pastor. This was the second time in two weeks I’d heard someone say they coveted my prayers and the phrase bothered me. For more than twenty-five years, I recited “Thou shalt not covet” as part of the Communion liturgy, so coveting anything speaks of sin to me. Granted, neither speaker was expressing a desire for my spouse, home or donkey; nevertheless, the phrase touched a nerve. If coveting is a sin, why did these men (both pastors) say they coveted my prayers?
Back in 1964, it was the slaying of Kitty Genovese in New York City. For thirty-five minutes, at least 38 people watched a killer stalk and murder her. Twice the attacker was frightened off by lights or voices but, when the police didn’t arrive and no one came to the woman’s aid, her assailant returned to continue his vicious attack. Apparently, the only call to the police was made after the woman was dead.
Like many, I mistook the phrase, “just deserts” for “just desserts.” The phrase comes from a now obsolete meaning of the word “desert” which was something deserved or merited. However we spell or say it, we tend to take a certain amount of pleasure when our enemies, adversaries, and those people who manage to make our lives difficult or downright miserable get what they deserve. “Poetic justice,” we say while watching them reap the consequences of their actions. Bad attitudes, excess drama, inappropriate behavior, substandard performance, selfishness, pettiness, laziness and insubordination all have a way of catching up with people. It’s hard to have any sympathy for them when they end up in a world of hurt of their own making. Jesus doesn’t tell us we have to be sympathetic but He does say we have to love and pray for them! We don’t have to allow their poison to seep into our lives, make excuses for them, enable them, tolerate horrible behavior, or become embroiled in their drama, but we do have to love and pray!
Last January, an official in a northern city was found guilty of twenty counts of bribery, extortion, and conspiracy along with mail, wire and tax fraud. His crimes netted him over $2 million in ill-gotten gains. Last month, he was sentenced for those crimes and, while he didn’t protest his innocence, he did protest his punishment. His crimes were merely “ethical mistakes” made because he was inexperienced and just doing his job. His lawyer compared his offenses with those of other corrupt officials, asserting his client’s felonies were less criminal so a shorter sentence was in order. In addition, he wasn’t really all that guilty since, in spite of his dishonesty, the city still managed to collect over $700 million in fines from the program he managed. Being just a little guilty, however, is much like being just a little bit pregnant—no matter how you spin it, you’re still guilty or pregnant.
As I grabbed my jacket, I noticed the familiar Under Armour logo on the front. Looking down, I saw that my t-shirt advertised a local boot camp class and my shorts displayed Fila’s logo. Eyeing my husband, I saw that his shorts displayed the same logo as mine and his shirt advertised the physical therapy clinic that has treated him over the years. While my cap sported the famed Nike swish, the name of a local pub was embroidered on his. A red swish peeked out from the top of his shoes while my socks were decorated with New Balance’s logo and pink ribbons for breast cancer awareness. The large “N” on each side of our sneakers identified them as another New Balance purchase. We were virtual walking billboards and we’d paid a hefty price for the privilege of advertising other people’s goods and services!
