Let Me Learn by Paradox

For when I am weak, then I am strong. [2 Corinthians 12:10b (NIV)]

The Bible is full of contradictory and almost absurd concepts: when we’re weak, we’re strong; to die is to live; and the more we give, the more we’ll have. We’re told the poor are rich, the persecuted will be blessed, the meek will inherit the earth, and the hungry and thirsty will be satisfied. We can only enter through the narrow gate; position, power and wealth mean nothing in God’s Kingdom; don’t worry about tomorrow and be happy when beset by trouble. When someone slaps us, we’re to offer the other cheek; when someone takes our shirt, we should give him our coat; we’re supposed love the unlovable and pray for those who persecute us. Jesus’s ways certainly seem to contradict the ways of the world.

Lord, fill us with your Holy Spirit. Help us to understand, accept and live by these concepts that seem to so impractical and paradoxical.

Valley of Vision Prayer

Lord, high and holy, meek and lowly, thou hast brought me to the valley of vision,
Where I live in the depths but see thee in the heights;
Hemmed in by mountains of sin I behold thy glory.
Let me learn by paradox that the way down is the way up,
That to be low is to be high,
That the broken heart is the healed heart,
That the contrite spirit is the rejoicing spirit,
That the repenting soul is the victorious soul,
That to have nothing is to possess all,
That to bear the cross is to wear the crown,
That to give is to receive,
That the valley is the place of vision.

Don’t Forget Your Prayers

Listen to my voice in the morning, Lord. Each morning I bring my requests to you and wait expectantly. [Psalm 5:3 (NLT)]

How much time do we spend getting ready in the morning, doing things like showering, fixing our hair, shaving or putting on make-up, choosing our clothes, dressing, eating breakfast, and maybe even exercising? We always seem to have enough time to tend to our physical needs, but how much time do we spend getting ready spiritually for the day? We need to tend to both our outer appearance and our inner thoughts. If we don’t forget our shoes, why is it so easy to forget our prayers?

I’m Sorry

An offended friend is harder to win back than a fortified city. Arguments separate friends like a gate locked with bars. [Proverbs 18:19 (NLT)]

Father, help us tear down the obstacles in our strained relationships. Show us how to remedy the tension between us and those who have hurt us or those we have hurt. Help us to forgive and to be willing to ask for forgiveness from others. Fill our hearts with love for all people, even those who have caused us pain.

In some families, please is described as the magic word. In our house, however, it was sorry. [Margaret Laurence]

Divine Intervention

Only I can tell you the future before it even happens. Everything I plan will come to pass, for I do whatever I wish. [Isaiah 46:10 (NLT)]

Is it coincidence or God’s providence? Today, let’s look for God’s hand in the events of this day, the people we meet, and the places we go. He has something wonderful planned for us.

Did I Really Say That?

Lord, place a guard at my mouth, a sentry at the door of my lips. Keep me from wanting to do wrong and from joining evil people in their wickedness. [Psalm 141:3-4a (GNT)]

Did I really say that? O Lord, how often I speak without thinking and how tempting it is to give in to gossip, criticism and negativity. Prevent me from speaking hastily, insensitively or imprudently.

For the Shepherds

And I will give you shepherds after my own heart, who will guide you with knowledge and understanding. [Jeremiah 3:15 (NLT)]

I offer this prayer for Christians everywhere, but especially for our pastors, teachers and missionaries. Enlighten them with your word and enrich their faith. Encourage them in their work and empower them as they witness and teach. May their lives be good examples and may their flocks respond positively to their leadership and lessons.
