LOOK INTO OUR HEARTS

Jesus told this story to some people who thought they were very good and looked down on everyone else: “A Pharisee and a tax collector both went to the Temple to pray. The Pharisee stood alone and prayed, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people who steal, cheat, or take part in adultery, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I give one-tenth of everything I get!’” [Luke 18:9-12 (NCV)]

Sometimes we’re more interested in appearing good than being good. Sometimes we’re more concerned about besting our neighbor than being our best. Sometimes we’re more interested in pointing out the failures of others than admitting our own shortcomings.

Lord, forgive us; we are sinners all.

“The tax collector, standing at a distance, would not even look up to heaven. But he beat on his chest because he was so sad. He said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’ I tell you, when this man went home, he was right with God, but the Pharisee was not. All who make themselves great will be made humble, but all who make themselves humble will be made great.” [Luke 18:13-14 (NCV)]

Everyone with a conceited heart is disgusting to the Lord. Certainly, such a person will not go unpunished. [Proverbs 16:5 (GW]

WHAT IS FAITH?

Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. [Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)]

Paul tells us that faith and hope go hand in hand. We can’t see into heaven and we can’t see into the future, so we have to have faith that what we hope for actually will occur. We must have faith in the reality of God’s promises. Yet, what exactly is faith? Faith isn’t just belief in our Triune God; faith is loving that God, following him, and accepting His will for our lives. Faith encompasses our minds and bodies, our hearts and souls, our thoughts, words, and actions. For me, clearly defining faith poses the same problem Supreme Court Justice Stewart had when defining obscenity: “faced with the task of trying to define what may be indefinable … I shall not today attempt further to define [it]… But I know it when I see it.”

Dear Lord, I may not be able to define or explain faith, but I know it when I see it! Let me filled with your Spirit and strong in my faith.

Faith is a work of God in us, which changes us and brings us to birth anew from God. It…makes us completely different people in heart, mind, senses, and all our powers, and brings the Holy Spirit with it. What a living, creative, active powerful thing is faith! … Faith is a living, unshakeable confidence in God’s grace; it is so certain, that someone would die a thousand times for it. This kind of trust in and knowledge of God’s grace makes a person joyful, confident, and happy with regard to God and all creatures. This is what the Holy Spirit does by faith. Through faith, a person will do good to everyone without coercion, willingly and happily; he will serve everyone, suffer everything for the love and praise of God, who has shown him such grace. [From “Preface to the Letter of St. Paul to the Romans,” by Martin Luther, translation by Bro. Andrew Thornton]

I JUST CALLED TO SAY “I LOVE YOU”

Morning, noon, and night my complaints and groans go up to him, and he will hear my voice. [Psalm 55:17 (GW)]

None of us enjoy getting a call or email from people only when they have a question that needs answering, a problem that need solving or simply need a favor. Friends share good news as well as bad. Maybe He’d like some good news now and then; give Him a call today!

I just called to say I love you
I just called to say how much I care
I just called to say I love you
And I mean it from the bottom of my heart [Stevie Wonder]

Call to me, and I will answer you; I will tell you wonderful and marvelous things that you know nothing about. [Jeremiah 33:3 (GW)]

HE CARES

DSC03642-Rosenlaui webThe righteous person has many troubles, but the Lord rescues him from all of them. [Psalm 34:19 (GW)]

He will deliver us from our troubles or carry us through them. Either way, we will be free of them eventually.

God doesn’t promise us a life of mountaintop experiences. There will be valleys to go through, too. Dark valleys. Disorienting valleys. Valleys of depression and despair. What he promises is not a road map that will give us a detour around those valleys, but that he will walk through those valleys with us. When we emerge from those experiences, we look back and realize that is where the growth is. It isn’t on the mountain tops, above the timberline; it’s in the valleys. [From “When You Can’t Come Back” by Dave and Jan Dravecky]

Even if I walk through a very dark valley, I will not be afraid, because you are with me. [Psalm 23:4a (NCV)]

JEHOVAH JIREH – GOD PROVIDES

And Abraham calleth the name of that place `Jehovah-Jireh,’ because it is said this day in the mount, `Jehovah doth provide.’ [Genesis 22:14 (YLT)]

Abraham gave that place the name “The Lord will give us what we need.” And it is said to this day, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be given.” [Genesis 22:14 (NLV)]

Since we were going away for the weekend, I carefully copied all of my devotion material (drafts, unposted drafts, meditation ideas, favorite verses, photos, etc.) onto a flash drive so I could work on my laptop. As I unpacked the laptop later that evening, the flash drive was missing. It was still resting comfortably in the slot of my PC at home! More upsetting to me was that, as I’d grabbed my briefcase on the way out, a voice in my head said, “Do you want to check for the flash drive?” Pride responded, “No need; I know what I’m doing!”

I’d counted on catching up on some writing, while enjoying the view and the birds, as I worked on a porch overlooking the peaceful lake. Everything I thought I needed, however, was in my office back home, so I did what comes naturally: I cried. Then, remembering that less than a month ago, I’d posted a prayer asking God for the wisdom to find a way around life’s obstacles, I prayed.

The following morning, God provided all I needed for a full day’s work. That day’s Bible reading led me to write three new meditations. If I count this meditation, my “disaster” led to four new messages! Not bad for a weekend’s work.

Yes, God will provide. He is our Jehovah-Jireh. We, however, have to be willing to stop our complaints (and tears) long enough not only to ask, but also to see His provision!

He gives us everything we need for life and for holy living. He gives it through His great power. [2 Peter 1:3a (NLV)]

SOMETHING NEW

7-14-14 09201 WEB2History merely repeats itself. It has all been done before. Nothing under the sun is truly new. Sometimes people say, “Here is something new!” But actually it is old; nothing is ever truly new. [Ecclesiastes 1:9-10 (NLT)]

Paleontologists in Argentina recently discovered fossils of a new species of dinosaur called the titanosaur. From the size of its bones, it’s estimated to have been 65-feet high and more than 130-feet-long; it probably weighed 155,000 pounds. Technically, Solomon was right: ”Nothing under the sun is truly new.” There is, however, a great deal in this world that is new to us! It may exist but we haven’t yet seen it.

One would think that by now there’s not much left to discover. It’s not just fossils that are unearthed; more than 10,000 new species are found every year! In fact, scientists believe that about 85% of land animals and 90% of sea animals have yet to be discovered and identified. In late June, the California Academy of Sciences announced the discovery of a new species of elephant shrew; it looks like a mouse but is genetically related to the elephant! That’s just from the zoologists; the news from the world of the botanists and the astronomers is similar.

dragonfly (halloween pennant) - FP3412-WEBFrom a creature that weighed 77 tons and could easily look into the window of a six-story building to the recent discovery of a frog the size of a pea when full grown, the variety of God’s creation is beyond belief. Why, when a few moths would probably do, are there more than 150,000 different kinds? Why didn’t God stop at a thousand birds instead of the 10,000 he made? Personally, I could have done with a few less than the 950,000 species of insects He gave us!

The diversity and richness of His creation confirm that we have an awesome God. He is unrestricted and certainly unrestrained. A God of vision and creativity, He is extravagant beyond belief. He has given us gifts so numerous that we can’t even find them all, let alone count them. The most precious (and most extravagant) gift of all, however, was His son and our salvation!

Thank you, God, for lavishing us with your many gifts, both large and small.

God spoke: “Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life! Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!” God created the huge whales, all the swarm of life in the waters, and every kind and species of flying birds. God saw that it was good. … God spoke: “Earth, generate life! Every sort and kind: cattle and reptiles and wild animals – all kinds.” And there it was: wild animals of every kind, cattle of all kinds, every sort of reptile and bug. God saw that it was good. [Genesis 1:20-21,24-25 (MSG)]
