What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?

Jesus replied, “I tell you the truth, unless you are born again, you cannot see the Kingdom of God.” “What do you mean?” exclaimed Nicodemus. “How can an old man go back into his mother’s womb and be born again?” [John 3:3-4 (NLT)]

How does one get reborn? If there is going to be a rebirth or resurrection, there must be a death or crucifixion. If we are going to be reborn, to have a new life, we must get rid of the old one. We can’t become new simply by slathering on a coat of righteousness or virtue as one would a coat of paint. We need an entirely new foundation. To do that, down must come the walls of bitterness, anger, prejudice, pride and any other walls that interfere with our relationship with God and our fellow man. Rebirth is neither easy nor fun; in fact, at times it can be downright unpleasant. But, rebuild we must if we are going to have a new life: one that is right and true and good.

Jesus replied, “I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. [John 3:5-6 (NLT)]

FORGIVENESS: AN UNDESERVED GIFT

He does not punish us for all our sins; he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve. For his unfailing love toward those who fear him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far from us as the east is from the west. [Psalm 103:10-12 (NLT)]

Father of Second Chances, we are sinners and beg your pardon and mercy. Redeemed by your son Jesus Chris, we are grateful for this gift of forgiveness and salvation. Thank you for not tiring of forgiving us time after time. Fill us with your peace and guide us as we meet this day.

It’s a New Year – Here’s to a New You

So here’s what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life – your sleeping, eating, going-to-work, and walking-around life – and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don’t become so well-adjusted to your culture that you fit into it without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You’ll be changed from the inside out. Readily recognize what he wants from you, and quickly respond to it. Unlike the culture around you, always dragging you down to its level of immaturity, God brings the best out of you, develops well-formed maturity in you. [Romans 12:1-2 (MSG)]

New Year’s morning, I opened my email to be greeted by an ad from my favorite clothing store telling me, “It’s a New Year – Here’s to a New You!” There was a beautiful model attired in the latest fashion color. If only a “new” self could be gotten by a little on-line shopping, plastic surgery, a change of jobs, a different hairstyle, a new house, or other external changes, but it can’t! Romans 12 tells us that make-overs certainly are possible. The transformation, however, is internal not external. The acceptance of Christ and the presence of His Holy Spirit in our lives will make us new, not from the outside in, but from the inside out!

Invite Him into Your Life

Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” [John 4:39-42 (NLT)]

After Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well, she immediately shared her experience with others. Curious about this man who claimed to be the Messiah, the villagers invited him into their homes so they could spend time with him. They didn’t believe simply because of what another person said; neither should we. We have no need to base our faith simply on someone else’s experience or interpretation of His message; we can base it on our first-hand experience with Him. When we invite Jesus into our hearts and lives, we, too, will know who He is.

Then Jesus told her, “I Am the Messiah! [John 4:26 (NLT)]

Why Take the Trip?

Jesus answered him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one goes to the Father except through me.” [John 14:6 (GW)]

People can have an accurate map and a clear route highlighted to get to a specific location, but that doesn’t mean they’re going to go take the trip. They need the desire to travel before they will depart. They must see that the destination is better than where they happen to be at the time.

Sharing our faith isn’t just about convincing someone that Jesus is the Son of God, our redeemer and savior; it’s much more than proving the accuracy and truth of the New Testament. Sharing our faith is reflecting the love, peace and joy of the destination. Only then will someone want to join us on our journey!

The surest mark of a Christian is not faith, or even love, but joy. [Samuel M. Shoemaker]

What’s Next for You?

Then God will give you a grand entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. [2 Peter 1:11 (NLT)]

We’re all familiar with those Disney ads when a celebrity or sport star is asked what they’re going to do next. Here’s an advertisement I’d like to see on television.

The unseen narrator would ask, “Now that you’re a Christian, what’s next for you?”

“I’m going to heaven!” would be the triumphant reply. “I’m not going to the Magic Kingdom; I’m going to the Kingdom of God! Hallelujah!”

…A man sitting at the table with Jesus exclaimed, “What a blessing it will be to attend a banquet in the Kingdom of God!” [Luke 14:15 (NLT)]
