It’s Time to Get Moving

Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Why are you crying out to me? Tell the Israelites to move on. Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.” [Exodus 14:13-16 (NIV)]

Yes, God will deliver us but He expects us to do our part. We can’t stand still and expect him to do the work! God parted the Red Sea, but Moses had to raise his staff and the Israelites had to do the walking. God provided the manna to feed them, but they had to gather it. Jesus provided the healing, but the bleeding woman had to push through the crowd to touch his cloak. Noah’s family wouldn’t have been saved if he hadn’t built the ark nor would the Jews have been saved if Esther hadn’t risked speaking to the king.

Sometimes, when God answers our prayers, we fail to recognize His solution because it involves some effort on our part. If all we ever did was pray and wait, not much would happen; we’d miss a lot of God’s gifts. God may provide the miracles but we need to do the work!

Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. [Thomas Alva Edison]

No Room for Bias or Typecasting Here

My brothers, as believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, you must never treat people in different ways according to their outward appearance. [James 2:1 (TEV)]

11-24-13 CCBCwebOh Lord, thank you for pleasantly surprising me when people’s behavior has contradicted what I expected from their appearance. I think of the young man with spiked hair in skateboard attire (and his wife, with her piercings, crazy outfits and multi-colored hair) who minister to troubled youth; the tattooed young woman who joins in that ministry; the frail elderly man who builds houses for Habitat; the intimidating woman who surprised me with her gentle voice and loving spirit when she reached out her hand in friendship; the wealthy retired executive who stocks shelves at the food pantry and the unemployed day laborer who works with him; the multi-pierced woman with purple hair who counsels unwed mothers; the devout Arab Muslim who is a patriotic American; the teen in the gangster attire who is part of the music ministry; the motorcyclist who faithfully attends church every Sunday; and the list goes on.

Forgive me when I unfairly judge someone merely on their appearance, be it their race, sex, attire, the music they listen to, the car they drive, the job they have, or even the dog they are walking! Stereotyping and prejudice have no place in your kingdom. I expect people to give me the benefit of the doubt when they meet me; guide me, Lord, so I give them the same courtesy.

You will be doing the right thing if you obey the law of the Kingdom which is found in the scripture, “Love your neighbor as you love yourself.” But if you treat people according to their outward appearance, you are guilty of sin, and the Law condemns you as a lawbreaker. [James 2:8-9 (TEV)]

Don’t Scratch That Itch

The snake was more clever than all the wild animals the Lord God had made. He asked the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must never eat the fruit of any tree in the garden’?”

The woman answered the snake, “We’re allowed to eat the fruit from any tree in the garden except the tree in the middle of the garden. God said, ‘You must never eat it or touch it. If you do, you will die!’” … The woman saw that the tree had fruit that was good to eat, nice to look at, and desirable for making someone wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it. [Genesis 3:1-2,6 (GW)]

Indeed, Satan is shrewd. He got Eve to concentrate on the one fruit she couldn’t have instead of all the fruit she already had. Temptation is a bit like a mosquito bite that is begging to be scratched. The more we think about the itch, the more we want to scratch it!

Lord, guide us, so that our focus is not on forbidden fruit but rather on the plentiful garden you have already given us.

Our Tears

You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. [Psalm 56:8 (NLT)]

God is compassionate. He is intimately connected to all of our emotions; he knows when we cry. He is there when we shed tears at the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, or the end of a relationship. He is there when a child enters rehab, when we hear the word “malignant,” and when our home is flooded. It is not, however, just tears of sorrow He collects. God is with us when we shed tears of joy at a wedding, when we’re promoted, and the first time a grandmother holds her grandchild. He is there, collecting tears, when a mother watches her child goes off to kindergarten and when that same child graduates from college. He is there when the doctor says “benign,” when we gather together for a family reunion, and when we recall the comical moments of family history. He has recorded not just our tears of pain and sorrow, but also our tears of relief, joy and laughter.

How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered! I can’t even count them; they outnumber the grains of sand! And when I wake up, you are still with me! [Psalm 139:17-18 (NLT)]

Let There Be Peace

And let the peace that comes from Christ rule your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful. [Colossians 3:15 (NLT)]

The only way to let peace truly rule our hearts is to surrender to God and allow him to rule our lives. It is His presence in our lives that will give us peace in the midst of turmoil, sorrow, or stress.

Oh Lord, let your Holy Spirit rule my life so that your heavenly peace rules my heart. Only then will I, indeed, be thankful in all circumstances.

Praise: A Powerful Antidote

Praise the Lord! Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever. Who can list the glorious miracles of the Lord? Who can ever praise him enough? [Psalm 106:1-2 (NLT)]

If we’re in pain, praise God. If we’re sinking under the weight of our troubles, praise God. When we’re mired in misery, praise God. Praise is a powerful antidote to our problems. It can heal our broken spirits and help us rise above our circumstances. Praise redirects our focus from our predicaments to God’s promises. It leads us to trust Him for a better tomorrow. It is praising God that will enable us to tap into His power!

Arise, O Lord, in your strength. We will sing and make music to praise your power. [Psalm 21:13 (GW)]
