WHERE WAS GOD?

Note: This was written the day after the Boston Marathon bombing, 2013

Why am I discouraged? What is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God! I will praise him again – my Savior and my God! [Psalm 42:5 (NLT)]

Lord, I’m angry! Where were you when the bombs exploded yesterday? Where were you when the twin towers fell, or when people were shot in the theater or when children died in their school? I’m angry and discouraged because I don’t understand how our almighty and loving God can allow these terrible things to happen. I know I’m supposed to have faith and trust in you, but it is so difficult in times like these.

Thank you, God, for loving and forgiving me even when I have difficulty loving, forgiving, and even believing in you.

I believe in the sun, even when it is not shining. I believe in love, even when I feel it not. I believe in God, even when he is silent.[Words found scrawled on a cellar wall in the bombed ruins of Cologne, Germany, following World War II]

THE PREREQUISITE FOR PEACE

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you. [Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)]

“Oh, Lord,” I complain, “My heart is troubled, where is this peace you promise?”

“Foolish child,” He responds, “Where is the trust in me that is the requirement for that peace?”

Trust in The Lord always, for the Lord God is the eternal rock.” [Isaiah 26:4 (NLT)]

HE KNOWS WHAT HE’S DOING

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose. [Romans 8:28 (NLT)]

Paul assures us that God is always working in us and through the events in our lives. When we face adversity or suffer misfortune, however, it is difficult to see how our circumstances could possibly glorify God or serve His purpose. How do we make sense of sorrow or hardship? Where is God’s hand in our troubles? Why is there suffering or affliction?

Those questions are unnecessary because we don’t need to know the answers. Besides, even if we knew the answers, we would never be able to understand them! All we really have to do is trust God and know that He loves us. Remember, God knows what he is doing even though we don’t!

THE LORD IS MY HELPER

So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” [Hebrews 13:6 (NLT)]

Thank you, God, for the trials and adversities in our lives. Help us to celebrate them and not cower in the face of them. Let us rejoice in their challenges and in the knowledge that we are not alone. You, Lord, are with us so there is nothing to fear. Our God is greater than all of our problems!

Anything that makes us cry out to God can be counted as a blessing! [Mary Southerland]

HE IS HERE!

Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand. [Isaiah 41:10 (NLT)]

Even when we doubt Him, even when we fail to see Him, even when we won’t trust Him, God is here for us. This is His promise!
