WHAT’S INSIDE OF US?

You don’t get wormy apples off a healthy tree, nor good apples off a diseased tree. The health of the apple tells the health of the tree. You must begin with your own life-giving lives. It’s who you are, not what you say and do, that counts. Your true being brims over in true words and deeds. [Luke 6:43-45 (MSG)]

People see our actions, but God knows our motives. People hear our words, but God knows our hearts.

IT ISN’T FAIR

I saw something else under the sun. The race isn’t won by fast runners, or the battle by heroes. Wise people don’t necessarily have food. Intelligent people don’t necessarily have riches, and skilled people don’t necessarily receive special treatment. But time and unpredictable events overtake all of them. No one knows when his time will come. Like fish that are caught in a cruel net or birds caught in a snare, humans are trapped by a disaster when it suddenly strikes them. [Ecclesiastes 9:11-12 (GW)]

Let’s face it: life’s not fair. Sometimes we’re fortunate and sometimes we’re not. Sometimes good things happen to bad people and, too often, bad things happen to the good. Free me, oh Lord, from the false expectation that life will always be fair. And please, Lord, don’t let the inequities of life keep me from believing in and serving you.

“It just doesn’t seem fair.”

“Fair? … There is nothin’ fair in a broken world full of broken people. Justice tries to be fair, but fails at every turn. There is never anything fair about grace or forgiveness. Punishment never restores fair. Confession doesn’t make things fair. Life is not about granting the fair reward for the right performance. Contracts, lawyers, disease, power, none of these care about fair. Better to take dead words out of your language, maybe focus on living words like mercy and kindness and forgiveness and grace. You might stop being so concerned about your rights and what you think is fair.” [From “Cross Roads” by Wm. Paul Young]

WHO’S RESPONSIBLE?

People ruin their lives by their own stupidity, so why does God get blamed? [Proverbs 19:3 (MSG)]

Isn’t it thought-provoking how often we take credit for our achievements, but tend to blame God for our failures and disappointments? Perhaps it should be the other way around.

My victory and honor come from God alone. [Psalm 62:7a (NLT)]

DO THE WORK

Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Don’t be afraid or terrified. The Lord God, my God, will be with you. He will not abandon you before all the work on the Lord’s temple is finished. [1 Chronicles 28:20 (GW)]

Thank you, Father, for reminding us that, although you make the plans, we have to do the work. Give us perseverance and endurance to keep working even when we see little or no progress. Thank you for your love, guidance, and patience. We know you have great plans for us; help us to achieve them.

Pray as if everything depended on God and work as if everything depended on you. [Attributed to St. Ignatius Loyola]

A LITTLE SELF-EXAMINATION IS IN ORDER

So why do you see the piece of sawdust in another believer’s eye and not notice the wooden beam in your own eye? [Matthew 7:3 (GW)]

In 2 Samuel, Nathan comes to David and tells him a story about a villainous man who has taken a neighbor’s lamb for himself when he had lambs enough of his own. “This man deserves to die!” is David’s quick condemnation. Nathan then points out that the villainous man is David himself, who has both killed his neighbor and taken his neighbor’s wife in adultery. We’re often like David in that it’s easy for us to see the sins of others and yet not recognize our own flaws and offenses. Lord, keep us from judging the faults of others when what we really need to do is acknowledge our own transgressions.

I have sinned against the Lord. [2 Samuel 12:13 (NLT)]

TODAY IS THE DAY THAT COUNTS

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them. If you can help your neighbor now, don’t say, “Come back tomorrow, and then I’ll help you.” [Proverbs 3:27-28 (NLT)]

Lord, I seem to expect you to respond immediately to my requests. Why do I seem so willing, then, to defer my responses to the requests of others? Help me make this day count!

I shall pass through this world but once. Any good, therefore, that I can do or any kindness that I can show to any human being let me do it now. Let me not defer or neglect it, for I shall not pass this way again. [Mahatma Gandhi]

Yesterday is a canceled check. Tomorrow is a promissory note. Today is cash in hand; spend it wisely. [Kay Lyons]
