He Wants Us to Look for Him

2014-1-24

God wanted people to look for him, and perhaps in searching all around for him, they would find him. But he is not far from any of us. It is through him that we are able to live, to do what we do, and to be who we are. [Acts 17:27-28a (ERV)]

O Lord, I see your hand when I hike in the mountains or hold a baby. I feel your presence and marvel at your extravagance when I’m in a garden or at the zoo. It’s easy to see your hand in moments of beauty and joy or when my breath is taken away by the wonders of your creation. Help me, Lord, to behold you in those lesser moments of life. Show me how to find you in times of challenge and fear, doubt and stress, and even tragedy.

Pray About Everything

Always be full of joy in the Lord. I say it again – rejoice! … Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 4:4,6-7 (NLT)]

Thank you, Lord, for all that has been and all that is yet to be. My future is in your hands. Reassure me so I don’t lose faith when it seems you are deaf to my pleas. Help me refine my requests so that my desires match your divine will. In you, O Lord, I place my trust in you. Fill me with your peace.

A Trustworthy Saying

This is a trustworthy saying:
If we die with him, we will also live with him.
If we endure hardship, we will reign with him.
If we deny him, he will deny us.
If we are unfaithful, he remains faithful,
For he cannot deny who he is. [2 Timothy 2:11-13 (NLT)]

Thank you, God, for believing in me, even when I doubt you. Thank you, Lord Jesus, for being faithful to me even when I am untrue to you. Thank you, Holy Spirit, for never turning your back on me even when I choose to disregard you. Forgive me for the times I have rejected you; thank you for your steadfast love.

He Listens to Our Cries

But when you ask God, you must believe and not doubt. Anyone who doubts is like a wave in the sea, blown up and down by the wind. Such doubters are thinking two different things at the same time, and they cannot decide about anything they do. They should not think they will receive anything from the Lord. [James 1:6-8 (NCV)]

Lord, I offer my prayers to you. I know you hear them and I’m confident that you can do all things. Yet, my faith wavers. Because I am so unworthy of your love, I’m not sure I really expect you to answer me. Even when I see your hand at work, when I see my prayers answered, it is difficult for me to believe that my appeals had anything to do with your action. Reassure me, O Lord, that even the prayers of a lowly sinner like me are powerful.

You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too great for me to understand! [Psalm 139:5-6 (NLT)]

The Sabbath: A day of Rest

2014-1-12Remember the day of worship by observing it as a holy day. You have six days to do all your work. The seventh day is the day of worship dedicated to the Lord your God. You, your sons, your daughters, your male and female slaves, your cattle, and the foreigners living in your city must never do any work on that day. In six days the Lord made heaven, earth, and the sea, along with everything in them. He didn’t work on the seventh day. That’s why the Lord blessed the day he stopped his work and set this day apart as holy. [Exodus 20:8-11 (GW)]

Why does God care that we set aside one day of the week to stop work? Can’t we worship him while we’re working? Perhaps it is a matter of trust. We must trust God that we can accomplish all that needs to be done in six days. He did! We must trust that our world really won’t crumble if we take a personal day and allow God to refresh us. The Israelites had to trust that they had gathered enough manna on the sixth day to feed them on the seventh. Our Sabbath (whatever day of the week we may observe) is a day to get rid of distractions and put God squarely at the center of our lives. It’s a day to turn off the world and tune in to God.

Help me, O Lord, to celebrate you and life’s blessings on this my Sabbath day.

Time to Get Started

But there are some things that you cannot be sure of. You must take a chance. If you wait for perfect weather, you will never plant your seeds. If you are afraid that every cloud will bring rain, you will never harvest your crops. [Ecclesiastes 11:4 (ERV)]

Lord, what is the plan for today? Has my fear of failure kept me from starting your work? Do I delay because the conditions aren’t perfect? Yet, is there ever an ideal time for anything? Thank you for reminding me that less than perfect progress is far better than no progress at all! Replace my fear with faith and my procrastination with action. Please give me the confidence that you will provide whatever it is I need to do your work today.

…Who waits until circumstances completely favor his undertaking, will never accomplish anything. [Martin Luther]

Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out. [James Bryant Conant]
