Treasure Hunting

I rejoice in your word like one who discovers a great treasure. [Psalm 119:162 (NLT)]

Our understanding of the Bible is a bit like being at the seashore. Having an unopened Bible and only encountering it when the gospel is read at church is like gazing at the ocean and listening to the surf. If we merely glance through the Bible from time to time, we’ve dipped our toes into the sea, but we’re barely wet. When we consider just a few verses, we’re like swimmers. We’ve gotten wet, but we’re still just skimming over the surface. When we actually study God’s holy word, when we examine each verse in its context, attempt to make sense out of it, and try to understand how it applies to our lives, we’re like divers who get beneath the surface of the sea. It is the divers who get to see the vivid colors, the fabulous sea creatures, the coral reefs and even discover hidden treasure. There is treasure to be found in God’s word. Let’s do a little diving today!

Yes, if you want better insight and discernment, and are searching for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure, then wisdom will be given you, a knowledge of God himself; you will soon learn the importance of reverence for the Lord and of trusting him. [Proverbs 2:3-5 (TLB)]

Our Fellow Traveler

Don’t you know? Haven’t you heard? The eternal God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, doesn’t grow tired or become weary. His understanding is beyond reach. He gives strength to those who grow tired and increases the strength of those who are weak. [Isaiah 40:28-29 (GW)]

Isn’t it nice to have a traveling companion who never tires or wavers? He doesn’t lag behind or stumble. He’s never lost or frightened and never grumbles or complains. Instead of getting impatient with our lack of progress or slow speed, His words are always encouraging. In fact, He leads the way and sustains us. Thank you, God, for your steadfast guidance and support.

Be Happy with the Lord

Be happy with the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Entrust your ways to the Lord. Trust him, and he will act on your behalf. [Psalm 37:4-5 (GW)]

Guide our prayers, O Lord. Give us thankful hearts so that we focus not on what is missing, but on what is there; not on what we want, but on what we already have been given. Let us be less concerned with our needs and more concerned with the needs of others. We trust you with our future. We are in your loving hands and know you will provide everything we need.

I trust you, O Lord. I said, “You are my God.” My future is in your hands. [Psalm 31:14-15a (GW)]

BE STILL

He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.” [Psalm 46:10 (NLT)]

Lord, silence my noisy thoughts so that I can hear your whisper from deep within me. Calm me so that your hushed voice can guide me through this day.

Someone had dissected Psalm 46 down to its smallest, deepest core. All that was left was the distilled essence of every prayer.
Be still and know that I am God.
Be still and know that I am.
Be still and know.
Be still.
Be.
[From “God Never Blinks” by Regina Brett]

Did I Really Say That?

Lord, place a guard at my mouth, a sentry at the door of my lips. Keep me from wanting to do wrong and from joining evil people in their wickedness. [Psalm 141:3-4a (GNT)]

Did I really say that? O Lord, how often I speak without thinking and how tempting it is to give in to gossip, criticism and negativity. Prevent me from speaking hastily, insensitively or imprudently.

For the Children

We ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through every kind of spiritual wisdom and insight. We ask this so that you will live the kind of lives that prove you belong to the Lord. Then you will want to please him in every way as you grow in producing every kind of good work by this knowledge about God. We ask him to strengthen you by his glorious might with all the power you need to patiently endure everything with joy. [Colossians 1:9-11 (GW)]

Let this be our prayer for the young people in our lives.
