What Does Our Reflection Say?

DSC01707reflectWEBJust as you can see your own face reflected in water, so your heart reflects the kind of person you are. [Proverbs 27:19 (ERV)]

What we see in the water or in a mirror may reflect our faces but certainly not our hearts. What we see in the faces of the people we meet, what we hear in their voices, and what we observe in their body language is a far better reflection of our real selves. What is mirrored back to us? Frowns or grins, harsh voices or pleasant tones, tears or laughter, furrowed brows or peaceful visages, clasped arms or hugs, the middle finger or a pleasant wave? Today, O Lord, may I only leave smiles in my wake!

When Is Enough Enough?

If someone has enough money to live well and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion — how can God’s love be in that person? Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions. [1 John 3:17-18 (NLT)]

This is the time of year we start preparing our taxes and adding up what we’ve given to the church and various charities. While we peruse the spread sheet, perhaps we should do some soul searching. What is the definition of “living well”? How much money is “enough”? When does “enough” become “too much”? How much do we need? How much need is there? How much should we give? How much should we keep? These questions don’t just apply to money; they also apply to our time, energy, and skills. Do we have enough to share those assets? These are questions we each have to prayerfully ask the Lord. They are difficult questions; they involve trusting God. Many of us know we have enough for now but wonder if we’ll have enough for whatever the future will bring. How much trust do we have that God will make whatever we have “enough”?

Yet true godliness with contentment is itself great wealth. After all, we brought nothing with us when we came into the world, and we can’t take anything with us when we leave it. So if we have enough food and clothing, let us be content. [1 Timothy 6:6-8 (NLT)]

What’s in Your Investment Portfolio?

Sell your material possessions, and give the money to the poor. Make yourselves wallets that don’t wear out! Make a treasure for yourselves in heaven that never loses its value! In heaven thieves and moths can’t get close enough to destroy your treasure. Your heart will be where your treasure is. [Luke 12:33-34 (GW)]

Having faith, following Jesus, and living our lives as God wants us to live them is a little like having a stock portfolio that never goes down in value and brings great long term dividends! How will you invest your life?

We can’t allow ourselves to get tired of living the right way. Certainly, each of us will receive everlasting life at the proper time, if we don’t give up. [Galatians 6:9 (GW)]

Love Isn’t a Feeling: It is a Choice

2014-1-7Three things will last forever – faith, hope, and love – and the greatest of these is love. [1 Corinthians 13:13 (NLT)]

Guide us in our relationships, O Lord. Instead of trying to improve those we love, show us how to be better people ourselves. Remind us daily that love is patient and kind, never vindictive or intolerant. Help us choose to be generous and understanding rather than selfish or indifferent, considerate and respectful rather than insensitive or rude. Let your love lead us to forgive, not blame, and honor, not scorn. Bless the ones we love. Keep us mindful that maintaining any relationship requires a conscious choice and continual commitment if it is going to withstand the challenges of life.

For the Least of These

Then the good people will answer, “Lord, when did we see you hungry and give you food, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you alone and away from home and invite you into our house? When did we see you without clothes and give you something to wear? When did we see you sick or in prison and care for you?”

Then the King will answer, “I tell you the truth, anything you did for even the least of my people here, you also did for me.” [Matthew 25:37-40 (NCV)]

Hunger, poverty, disease, war, homelessness: these problems are so daunting, so overwhelming, that it is easy to step back and say there is nothing we can do. I recently met a young man who decided there was something he could do. After seeing extreme poverty in his work as an engineer, he founded a charity that helps the hungry mothers and children who live in garbage dumps in Zambia, Sierra Leone and India. His organization, completely staffed by volunteers, now provides these people with food, clean water and the hope of a future.

Last week, I also learned of a teacher in one of our nation’s cities who was shocked to learn that several of his students went hungry on the weekends. The breakfast and lunches provided by the school during the week were the only meals on which they could depend. He started a group that now provides food bags on Fridays that help these children get through the weekend without going hungry.

These men did more than throw their money at a problem; they put their compassion to work. Although they’ve not solved the larger issues of poverty, they have made a major difference in the lives of some of God’s children. They didn’t let the fact that they couldn’t do it all keep them from doing something.

Dear Lord, there is so much need in our troubled world. Is there something I can do to make life better for the least of your children? Help me to identify the task and give me the strength and skill to accomplish your work.

Then they will reply, “Lord, when did we ever see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and not help you?” And he will answer, “I tell you the truth, when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were refusing to help me.” [Matthew 25:44-45 (NCV)]

New Year’s Resolution (New Year’s Day 2014)

Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. [Colossians 3:12 (NIV)]

This day and every day –

I will think of someone to love and for whom to pray;
I will tell someone what it is I like, appreciate or admire about them;
I will practice random acts of kindness;
I will set aside quiet time for Bible study and prayer;
I will resist the urge to disparage, gossip, or complain;
I will express my gratitude to God and other people;
I will intentionally look for the extraordinary in the ordinary;
I will live each day as if it is my last.
