FAITHFUL AND ABLE

And if God cares so wonderfully for wildflowers that are here today and thrown into the fire tomorrow, he will certainly care for you. Why do you have so little faith? [Matthew 6:30 (NLT)]

 I will look up for there is none above you;
I will bow down to tell you that I need you.
Jesus, Lord of all; Jesus, Lord of all!
I will look back and see that you are faithful;
I look ahead believing you are able.
Jesus, Lord of all; Jesus, Lord of All!
[“I Will Look Up” – Elevation Worship (Redman, Ingram, Joye, Brown, Brock)]

great blue heron -We sang the words, “I will look back and see that you are faithful; I look ahead believing you are able!” Oh, how true I thought as I joyfully raised my voice in praise. He is incredibly faithful and overwhelmingly able. Why then, I wondered, do we ever doubt our Lord?

Perhaps we doubt because we know how very unfaithful and unable we humans are. My life is filled with a series of mishaps, mistakes, and failures and I suspect yours is, too. We misplace our phones and must call ourselves to find them; we read the words “dry clean only” but toss the sweater into the washer anyway. We proof-read a dozen times only to find mistakes in the finished product and write grocery lists but leave them at home. We mean to do a task and then forget; we assert we know what we’re doing when we haven’t a clue. We promise but disappoint, plan but never carry out, and our repairs make it worse. We promise to pray for someone and don’t, intend to write a letter and get diverted, or mean to say “I love you!” but offer a complaint instead! While we’re often unfaithful to our promises and unable to fulfill them, our perfect God is both faithful to His promises and more than able to fulfill every one!

A friend recently pointed out that “we are a church of imperfect people following a perfect Lord!” He then added, “While we may not be perfect, we can be faithful.” Amen to that! In spite of our many failings, we can be faithful to our faithful and very able God!

A person who wholly follows the Lord is one who believes that the promises of God are trustworthy, that He is with His people, and that they are well able to overcome.  [Watchman Nee]

True, some of them [the Jews] were unfaithful; but just because they were unfaithful, does that mean God will be unfaithful? Of course not! Even if everyone else is a liar, God is true. [Romans 3:3-4a (NLT)]

But I am trusting you, O Lord, saying, “You are my God!” My future is in your hands. [Psalm 31:14-15a (NLT)]
