Praise the Lord, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the earth. For his unfailing love for us is powerful; the Lord’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the Lord! [Psalm 117 (NLT)]

While listening to praise music, I heard an old favorite from my Girl Scout days: “Pass It On.” The words, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going,” got me thinking about candles and God’s love.

Light a candle. From that candle light another, and another, and still another. The light hasn’t diminished; it’s only gotten brighter. Love, like the flame of a candle doesn’t diminish as it is spread around; it just grows stronger. While having more children may lessen the amount of money we have for our children, it certainly doesn’t lessen the love we have each child. In fact, our love has increased so that we can still love each child as if he or she were our only child. If this is true of an earthly parent’s love, think how it is with our Heavenly Father’s love. God loves each and every one of us as if we were his only child.

Let’s take the analogy of the candles a bit further. Light a candle. From that candle light another and then light new candles from both of these candles. Now, from the four lit candles, light four more candles. See how fast the light has spread. What if we spread the blessing of God’s grace in the same way? If every day we pass along God’s love, and if that love is passed on to others, imagine how quickly his light will increase. After all, “It only takes a spark to get a fire going!”

“Pass it On” [Kurt Kaiser]
It only takes a spark to get a fire going,
And soon all those around can warm up in its glowing;
That’s how it is with God’s Love,
Once you’ve experienced it,
Your spread the love to everyone
You want to pass it on.

What a wondrous time is spring, When all the trees are budding
The birds begin to sing, the flowers start their blooming;
That’s how it is with God’s love,
Once you’ve experienced it.
You want to sing, it’s fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on.

I wish for you my friend This happiness that I’ve found;
You can depend on God It matters not where you’re bound,
I’ll shout it from the mountain top
I want the world to know
The Lord of love has come to me
I want to pass it on.

This is the message you have heard from the beginning: We should love one another. … And this is his commandment: We must believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as he commanded us. [1 John 3:11,23 (NLT)]
